Tanning booths have been popular for way too long. Just like the actual sun, tanning beds emit UV rays that can damage your skin – causing wrinkles, premature aging, and even skin cancer. While a flawless tan looks great, it’s just not worth the risk.
That’s why we’re ultra-thankful for the new developments in sunless tanning technology.
Sunless tanning, or self-tanning, allows women (and stylish men) to maintain perfectly bronzed skin without the risks.
Sunless tanning products range from over-the-counter lotions, gels and aerosol sprays, Mystic Tan, to ultra-professional tanning systems like Luxury on Location’s personal favorite, SunFX spray tanning.
How do sunless tanning products work? Contrary to popular belief, they don’t actually dye your skin. Instead, the tanning magic is due to dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, the active ingredient in most tanning products. DHA causes a (safe) chemical reaction with the amino acids in your skin, resulting in a goddess-like tan with none of the burn. The process is FDA-approved.
While the color doesn’t wash of, it fades in five to seven days as your body naturally sloughs off its dead skin cells. That means it’s time to reapply!
Remember: Sunless tans don’t guard you against sunburn, so always make sure you wear sunscreen when you’re out in the real sun. Red skin is never in.
